Get 'Yer Tickets - Shrek the Musical

If your kids loved Shrek the movie, they'll love Shrek The Musical too - and so will the parents. I speak from experience because we saw this show on Broadway last summer, because we wanted to take the kids to their first Broadway show. And it couldn't be something adult and dark, or inappropriate. We figured we'd go along with it, but wouldn't like it. We were wrong. It was fun, the music was great and we left in high spirits.

The show is now on the road, and coming to San Francisco. Like the movie, Shrek the Musical is based on the characters from William Steig's book Shrek!, and the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek (the first movie). It tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. Shrek is joined by a wise-ass donkey (who, at least on Broadway, I could have sworn was Eddie Murphy, but wasn't). They fight a fearsome dragon, rescue the princess Fiona - you probably know the rest of the story.

As for the cast, Shrek is played by Eric Petersen, who was in the Broadway production. Haven Burton, also from the Broadway show, plays Princess Fiona. Alan Mingo, Jr. is the donkey. David F. M. Vaughn plays the vertically challenged villain Lord Farquaad (because it's live, how they handle this character's "stature" is hilarious). For theater buffs, the book and lyrics are by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire(Rabbit Hole), music by Olivier Award-winner Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie,  Caroline, or Change), and is directed by Tony Award nominee Jason Moore (Avenue Q) and Tony and Emmy Award-winner Rob Ashford (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Promises Promises).
