My memories of sheep sheering are from my honeymoon in New Zealand. I got to feed a baby sheep on stage with a bottle, while my husband was laughing at me in the audience. We then watched the sheep get sheared. Quiet an experience to see a naked sheep versus one covered with wool. And to feel the lanolin in the wool.
Now it's your turn. The San Francisco Zoo has a sheep shearing event this Saturday, May 8th from 10:30 to 2 p.m. You'll also learn how wool is turned into scarves via a spindle spinning demo, needle felting and scarf weaving demos. Then you can try it at the Family Farm at the zoo.
If you're a zoo member, come early, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., and you'll get to do other activities, like making a sheep from wool!
