Day Trip: Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

It's been a few years since we've been to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve tide pool. We were overdue for a visit. Plus, my daughter is really into sea life, so this is her idea of heaven.

The reserve is in Moss Beach, about 6 miles north of Half Moon Bay. There's a small parking lot on site, or residential street parking as well. Look for my favorite "little red house" which is an apt name for such a cute cottage.

You'll enter the reserve and walk down to sea level. You'll want to go at low tide or you will not get much out of your tide pool excursion!

The further out you walk, the more starfish (aka sea stars) you'll find. Remember, you're not supposed to touch!

If you're lucky, you'll also see some sea lions, though you have to stay at least 300 feet away. They'll have some pylons up to keep you away - don't worry.

Be very careful not to slip. Our friend's daughter slipped on the wet rocks and almost broke her arm. She actually went to the hospital to get x-rayed, that's how bad it was.

And don't step on the bivalves. Did I mention you should wear shoes with a really good tread? And shoes that can get wet (put a spare pair of shoes/socks in the car).

Here's where you can find more information on Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, including the tide charts so you can plan your timing appropriately! Pack a picnic and spend some time on the beach when you're done.

  1. Thanks for the info. We've just moved to the peninsula from Michigan and I'm trying to get my bearings on all the fun stuff to do with my kids. We'll have to try this sometime soon.
