Camp Mather - Summer and Fall Family Camp
Did you know that the city of San Francisco offers summer family camp in the High Sierras? Neither did I. They have two upcoming fall camping weekends: September 8-12 and September 15-19. Family camp (summer and fall) offers activities like swimming, arts & crafts, basketball, bike riding, sack races, nightly films, dancing and bingo.
Unfortunately I got the information after the fall lottery registration, which ended July 4. But if you're interested, you should stay on top of this and see if there's any availability or start making your plans for next summer. Learn more about Camp Mather family weekends here.

Art for Kids in the Bay Area
Someone in one of my email groups asked about places for kids to do art in the Bay Area. Where do you like to go? (And don't forget to vote for Frisco Kids in the Circle of Moms Top 25 SF Mom Blogs - it's quick and easy).
Here were the places suggested, and some I found on my own:
MOCHA (Museum of Children's Art) - Oakland
MOCHA offers drop-in art, family programs, Saturday stories (art and literacy), field trips, parties, camps and special programs. And if you can't make it out, check out their MOCHA at Home program, where they tell you how to do a project.
Pixie Hall Studio - Noe Valley/SF
Pixie Hall Studio offers summer camps, workshops and alternative (Reggio Emilia inspired) preschool. Check out photos on their blog.
Art Camp - San Francisco
Art Camp offers classes to preschool and elementary school kids in fine art. They get exposed to the art, adn then make a project in response to what they've seen.
4Cats in Kensington (Berkeley) and Portrero Hill (San Francisco)
4Cats offers summer camps, workshops and parties. Art projects might include sculpey, splatter paint, clay, acrylics, sculpture, mixed media, paper mache and more.
CQ's Art for Kids - San Mateo
My friend Jill just gave me the head's up on this new art studio. They're offering free "open studio" classes this week, though you need to call to save space (650-228-4698), since she can only take 10 kids (details on the events page). For ages 3-16, the studio offers classes and parties.
ARTtifact - San Francisco
ARTifact offers summer camp, plus school time classes for kids up to age 12. They even have a playgroup for kids under 3 (and their caregiver)
San Francisco Children's Art Center - Fort Mason (San Francisco)
This nonprofit center offers classes, summer camp, parties. Classes allow kids ranging in age from 22 months, to age 10. Classes might include bookmaking, architectural sculpture, clay, mixed media and photography.
Paint and Brush - Fremont
Camps, classes and parties for kids ages 4-12. They also offer classes for children with disabilities.

Sponsored Deal: Yogurt!
I admit to an obsession with self-serve frozen yogurt, and so this deal appeals to me. Get $10 in frozen yogurt for $5 at Snowee in San Mateo. They offer 8 flavors a day (rotating from 30 choices), plus bubble drinks, shaved ice, hot dogs, chicken strips etc. (yes, a weird combination, but they do host birthday parties so that makes more sense).
You can check out their daily flavors here. And you can get the deal today and tomorrow at Juice in the City.
Juice in the City is a Frisco Kids affiliate, and Frisco Kids makes a small percentage from any sale. If you buy $5 in yogurt, we'll make, what - a penny?

Sounds like a place my son would love! The winner gets a 4 hour drop-in play card to redeem at the Marin (San Anselmo) or Pleasanton location. The value: $36-40. Anyone who doesn't win the grand prize, but wants a free 30 minute card to use, let me know and I'll email it to you.
Tru-Kid All Natural Skin Care for Kids - I got some of these products to review, and I'm in the process of trying them (the sunblock works well - my kids still need to try the shampoo and detangler). This Oakland, CA company offers lots of skin care (and hair care) products that are natural and contain no synthetic dyes, paba, parabens, petroleums, gluten (I didn't know skin care products contained gluten) and other ingredients you might not want to use. The winner gets to choose 3 products - shipping included!
Cinemark movie ticket - One platinum supersaver prepaid admission, valid for one box office admission. There's a premium for 3D movies, and it doesn't work for IMAX. Good for Cinemark, Century Theaters, CineArts and Tinseltown. This is sponsored by Frisco Kids - sorry there's just one, but when's the last time you went to a movie with your significant other anyway?
Contest Rules
These are bit more complicated than most of our contests, because we have so many fabulous prizes to give away! So read carefully. The contest closes on Friday, July 29 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Any comments made after that time will be deleted or not considered. You can only win one prize (unless we have too few entries).
1. To enter, you must leave a comment stating the prizes you want in the order that you want them (or if you're open to all prizes and don't care which you win, state that too). I don't want to give you something you can't use. Make it easy for me!
2. You must also leave your email address (or if you don't want to post that online, email me at blog at friscokids dot net, and tell me which entry is yours). If I don't know how to reach you, I can't give you the prize.
3. You get an additional entry for becoming a fan of Frisco Kids on Facebook. Make a comment here if you do that. And if you're already a friend on Facebook, just tell me that in an additional blog post comment - that counts too.
4. If you sign up for emails from Frisco Kids, you'll get an additional entry (see #3 - no penalty if you are already an email subscriber). You can sign up on the top right of the page.
5. You should vote for Frisco Kids on the Circle of Moms' Top 25 SF Mom Blog list. Voting does not get you an extra entry or any special preference, but it does make others take notice of this fabulous blog. And you want to spread the word, right? After all, Frisco Kids is offering such fabulous prizes and you can only win one of them.
6. After the entry cut-off, I will use random.org to get a randomized list of winners. From that list, the first person will win his/her first choice prize. The second person will win his/her first choice prize (if available), or else I'll go to the person's second choice prize. And so forth. If you're interested in any/all prizes, let me know, so you won't be shut out of the contest. I realize that not all prizes will appeal to all people.
7 I'll email you that you won, and you'll have 48 hours to get back to me with your address (if requested) or to confirm you got my email so I can send your prize. If you don't get back to me, I may give the prize to someone else. Sorry!
I'll post the winners once I've gotten them all nailed down. Please check out the wonderful sponsors who are offering prize items!

The Wiggles - Ah, I have fond memories of taking the kids to see the Wiggles in Oakland. Dori was 3 and Zack was 1 - and we had a Wiggly Party! The Aussies are coming back, to the Paramount Theatre in Oakland for two shows, and Frisco Kids has a family 4-pack of tickets to give away. It's for the Big Birthday live show on Friday, August 12 at 6:30. The Wiggles are having their own contest to let one audience member be part of Fruit Salad (yummy yummy). Even if you don't win, you can get tickets as low as $15.50 on Ticketmaster - use code UKULELE! for $10 off tickets. If you go to the show, bring some pet food and dog blankets to benefit local animal shelters.

Sponsored Deal of the Day: San Benito House in Half Moon Bay
I've posted a few times before about the San Benito House in Half Moon Bay. I've stayed there myself and the place holds special memories for my husband and me. So I'm always excited when I see a deal for it. Friday through Sunday, Juice in the City is offering a deal on a one night stay in a standard room with private bath (but not the romance suite - which I never stayed in). Plus you can get 20% off another night's stay. The deal is for $64 for the night. Wow! The San Benito House is right in downtown Half Moon Bay, so there's plenty to do walking around downtown there - and a quick drive from SF, the peninsula and South Bay. To get the deal, click here.

WTF? Sippy the Straw
Not sure how to categorize this post, but I got an email from Sippy the Straw and it had me scratching my head, in a good way. And not because of lice. Apparently the 8 foot tall Sippy the Straw is touring the Bay Area looking for its perfect drink. If you see Sippy, you can share photos on Sippy's Facebook page (and join Frisco Kids' page while you're at it). And if you have any clue what this is about, please comment here!

Review: Lice Shampoos
Last spring, when we had a certain critter crawling around the hair of one of my children (who shall remain nameless), we avoided the medicated shampoos that many others run out to buy. We did the olive oil suffocation method. Which worked well. Followed by hours of nit picking and many more shampooings to get the oil out of the hair.
On round 2, a month later, we were out of town. Nothing like showing up at Grandma's house with lice! She was thrilled. So thrilled that she insisted we call a professional (though I'm an excellent nitpicker, my mother just doesn't trust me in that regard). The lice people came with TLC, Total Lice Control shampoo, which is supposed to kill not only the bugs, but the nits. I can vouch for it killing the bugs. I can't speak for the nits, because the only way to guarantee you get your kid back into school is to be nit free. And I want my kids in school, not at home with dead eggs in their hair.
The shampoo (which I paid $20/bottle) is natural, chemical-free and doesn't smell too great. Especially when you leave it on for 30 minutes, as you're instructed to do (imagine stuffing an entire rosemary plant up your nose for half an hour). So when I mention to my kids that we're doing a prophylactic lice shampooing, they usually respond by screaming and running away from me.
The other prevention method I use is straight tea tree oil, purchased at Trader Joe's, and rubbed on the hairline with a Q-tip. This method isn't too popular in the house either, with one child claiming it itches and smells, and the other child just saying it stinks. And they're right.
The nice people at Fairy Tales Hair Care offered to send me a bottle of their shampoo and conditioner to review. Given that everyone else I know in the world uses Fairy Tales, I jumped at the chance. Fairy Tales shampoo does not kill lice. It's supposed to repel them, using natural oils to repel them. Given how good the shampoo and conditioner smell, I can't understand why the lice wouldn't flock to the hair too.
Does it work? I don't know yet. There hasn't been an outbreak of lice in camp. But I do know that my child who complains the most about getting shampooed, doesn't mind using this shampoo or conditioner at all. And that's huge.
If we do get another outbreak, I will dip back into the TLC. But for prevention, I'm going to continue to try the Fairy Tales stuff.
What products do you use and like for lice control???
(The Fairy Tales people came out with a new lice app - which can track outbreaks in your area. It's free and called the Facts of Lice on itunes).

Sponsored Deals of the Day: Facial, Chocolate and Personalized Story Book
Three great deals this weekend from Juice in the City.
(and did you vote for me today in the Circle of Moms SF Mom Blogs Top 25 list? You can vote every 24 hours -no registration. Easy easy! Two clicks. Just check out the deals below first)
FACIAL
Those on the peninsula (or who are willing to travel to the peninsula) can cash in on an awesome facial at Soluna Skincare in Menlo Park. It's $49 ($110 value). It doesn't expire until February 15, 2012 (right after Valentine's Day - your hubby will be happy you thought of this gift he can give you - early!). Choose from 4 different facials (see them here). You can buy two of them for yourself, though only use one per visit. Who who really needs two facials in one visit anyway? Buy the deal through Sunday, July 17 here.
PERSONALIZED STORY BOOK
You might have seen this post I did previously - well now's your chance to get in on it if you missed it. This is a personalized story book by Flattenme, a company started by a Bay area mom with 4 kids (4!). The deal is you get a hard cover book personalized for the lucky child. Choose from 8 different stories. And don't forget - it was one of Oprah's favorite holiday items in recent years. I'm still bummed I wasn't in the audience for any of those "favorite things" shows. Ah well. Get the deal here for $14 through Sunday. It's on the North Bay page, but it doesn't matter where you live.
CHOCOLATE
Need I say more? Oh yes, 50% off. For $10 you'll get $20 worth of chocolates and sweets form Danville Chocolates. Get the deal here for $10 through Sunday. It's on the East Bay page. You can buy two deals, giving one to a friend. It's worth visiting their site just for the photos. No calories just to look! Expires in January, giving you the whole year to work off the calories.
